Paul, The London Reconnections piece is based on unofficial murmurings from TfL, rather than the author's own proposal for a PiccaDist reconfiguration, though I'm sure there are a few personal touches. But even with this reconfiguration there is no more necessity for a Turnham Green stop than at present: in fact if TfL wanted to save money by not installing platform edge doors at Turnham Green, we'd lose even the current limited Piccadilly service. However, an alternative reconfiguration has been suggested in the comments to the article which would leave little argument against a full Piccadilly service at Turnham Green, with South Ealing (and maybe Northfields) dropping off onto a new District-Line branch to Northfields. You can see the new map as the second option here: http://www.townend.me/files/piccadilly.pdf This configuration would also avoid having to rebuild Chiswick Park to access the Richmond branch as it stays on the new District Branch to Northfields. I also think this makes a lot of sense in terms of the track configuration, with District and Piccadilly services each having a pair of tracks out to Northfields rather than having to interlace on two tracks through Ealing Common as at present: http://carto.metro.free.fr/cartes/metro-tram-london/ This superb map is required reading for any "crayonista" who is thinking of redrawing the tube, or in fact anybody who wants to see how we got to where we are today. As for timing, the murmurs are for new trains in 2021, which would mean new signalling before then, with full implementation by 2024. And I would expect Turnham Green to get the benefit of lifts in time for a Piccadilly stop, as would be expected at an interchange station. |
