Richard is wrong both to say that Ken Livingstone during his term as Mayor of London was committed to low fares or neglected to initiate investment in the network. He more or less matched Boris's appetite for consistent above inflation fare rises but you need to give him credit for improvements such as the upgrade of London Overground. The idea of passengers having any say in shaping the tube network is anathema to TfL and they resisted the stop at Turnham Green as long as they could and will continue to try and hamstring it if they can. Don't believe for one second anybody who tells you that the stop would have happened anyway as soon as the upgrade took place. Progress will only be made by political pressure on TfL and Francis is absolutely right in now putting the onus back on the politicians to ensure that they pin TfL down on exactly what happens next. |
