"The "inability to mix" problem arises if you want to install platform-edge doors, which might be necessary in order to run automated trains. The door positions are unlikely to be the same on both types of train" Precisely, plus the London-specific problem of intermediate height platforms due to tube and SSL stock serving the same platforms - obviously you don't want to mince too many customers under automated trains as it results in bad publicity and if Ealing Common is converted to Piccadilly only you just put tube sized platforms and PEDs in and automation works fine. PEDs have other beneficial effects in reducing suicides, accidents and grit blowing in your eyes around the stations. This applies to the west of Rayners Lane too, but the idea there is that the few Piccadillys that go that way would unleash the train captain for the last few stops and operate manually with the semi-employed driver checking for arms and legs under the train before closing the doors and hitting the go button, much as on the Victoria, Northern or Jubilee. LonRec's article is now up (I read a pre-release copy published in error!). http://www.londonreconnections.com/2014/getting-radical-piccadilly-line-upgrade-2/ |
