Interesting post, Thomas, thanks. The "inability to mix" problem arises if you want to install platform-edge doors, which might be necessary in order to run automated trains. The door positions are unlikely to be the same on both types of train. Otherwise there's no reason why you can't run a mixture of automated and driver-controlled trains on the same track. Paris managed it in 2012 on Metro line 1 during the introduction of new automated trains which had the same door positions as the old ones. |
