"Thomas this doesn't mention the Piccadilly line (District and other 'sub-surface' lines only)." The contract covered the 86 existing cabs of Piccadilly stock, which would need the new SSL signalling to operate to Rayners Lane and through Acton Town to Ealing Common as it shares the same tracks. It's widely assumed that all four tracks from Barons Court to Acton Town would be similarly resignalled. It's been hypothesised that since this gets rid of the legacy signalling constraint at TG it's the bare minimum upgrade required for an all-day stop there. TfL have never said what they mean by 'upgrade', by the way. Now that this is torn up and there's a likely delay (I don't believe you can invited expressions of interest, tenders, assess and award a contract in time to get a full SSL resignalling by 2018 any more than I believe in the tooth fairy) the point of re-equipping the existing nearly 50 year old trains for a few years becomes rather moot and you might as well order new trains with the signalling built in from the start. |
