I was wondering how long it would be before someone complained about this. And fair enough too. TfL have a programme of replacing shelters with their new Landmark style. They send my office (LB Hounslow transport planning & policy section) a list from time to time on the off-chance that we want to take the opportunity to have any of the new shelters located in a different position or fund a larger one. However, in this particular case, the old shelter wasn’t on the list, and I only noticed it coming down a week ago. To be fair to TfL, they had programmed to erect the new one immediately, in the same position. However, I had noticed that the shelter and the people standing directly in front of it caused quite a significant sightline problem for traffic coming out of Duke Road. It’s very easy not to see a cyclist heading west on CHR if he/she is in the bus lane, close to the kerb, if several people are waiting for a bus. Anyway… an urgent site visit was arranged, and it was agreed that the new shelter would be placed about 6 metres further east, with the bus stop flag-post also located further east. You’ll see the proposed locations of the new shelter and flag post marked in paint on the pavement. So far so good, and subsequent to the markings being put down I’ve agreed to fund a larger shelter (a 7m long one). Unfortunately, this won’t arrive overnight. We’ll continue to chase TfL up to ensure this site is prioritised, but meantime I’m afraid we’ll have to hope for fine weather. I’ll also ask colleagues in Hounslow Highways whether they can provide a bench as a stopgap. So, apologies from me, but you will get a bigger shelter and the site will be safer due to the new location. And TfL have promised to ensure their replacement lists are up to date CCF |
