Another problem with the prevention of FGM is the situation of girls in the relevant age group being taken or sent back to places like Somalia or Sudan for 'special holidays'. How this can be addressed I don't know, other than examining all female children of that age and cultural background as they are leaving the country and re-examining them on their return with a view to prosecuting the parents if FGM is found to have occurred. The implications of this would be horrendous at both a practical and a political level. The only alternative within this country is Education, Education, Education, plus a determination by the authorities to rigorously pursue all reported cases and severely punish those found guilty of colluding in or committing this dreadful and barbaric crime. |
