Tom

It is my understanding that the invasion of Afghanistan was approved by UN Security Council resolutions. Therefore in that respect my friend may be wrong. The War in Afghanistan may not have been illegal. The US, British and other NATO and allied forces that are currently in Afghanistan are there at the invitation of and with the approval of the Afghan Government, such as it is.

However, I think there is general agreement that the Labour Government's conduct of the war has been criminally irresponsible and incompetent - in terms of its failure to plan, prepare, fund and execute the invasion, occupation and reconstruction of Afghanistan properly.

The Labour Government's failure to equip the British armed forces properly has led to unnecessary loss of British lives and very many serious injuries.

This is generally acknowledged right across the political spectrum. Yesterday I heard David Cameron very eloquently speak after his return from Afghanistan on Sunday morning. He was applauded by over 1300 people at the non-political charitable function I was attending when he paid tribute to the men and women serving in Afghanistan. He was applauded even more loudly when he was announced as the next Prime Minister. The country is sick and tired of Gordon Brown.

As for facts, here are some facts:

Gordon Brown now has 6 million people employed by the Government, 5.6 million on state benefits and Labour has brought in over 3 million immigrants since 1997. Many constituencies, particularly in Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the North of England have a majority of people who are employed by the Government, who are dependent on benefits or who are dependents of those employed by the Government.

There are now 800,000 more employed by the Government than in 1997. In addition, millions more are employed by quangoes or by companies or consultancies who are dependent on the Government for their income. Most of these people and their dependents will vote Labour. Gordon Brown has constructed a massive payroll vote.

This year the Government will borrow about £180 billion - the equivalent of all Government spending on the NHS and Education. Tax receipts are declining but public expenditure is increasing because of the recession. The national debt is at the highest level since the Second World War.

The balance of trade deficit is minus $ 128.2 billion compared to a deficit of minus $ 550 billion for the USA, a deficit of minus $77 billion for Spain, minus $ 55 billion for France and minus only $5 illion for Italy. In contrast China has a balance of trade surplus of $ 239 billion, $ Saudi Arabia has a surplus of 212 billion, Germany has a surplus of $ 171 billion, Russia has a surplus of $ 101 billion, Norway has a surplus of $ 51.5 billion, Netherlands has a surplus of $ 45.6 billion and Brazil has a surplus of $ 25 billion. Britain's deficit is the second highest in the world after the USA.

Britain has a huge problem because the huge and growing public sector pemnsions liability is unfunded- it has to be paid out of current government income. and while productivity in the private sector has increased, productivity in many areas of the public sector has declined. despite computers and modern technology, the Government now employs far more people than prior to 1997 - and many of them are simply not necessary.

Public sector pay continues to increase while private sector payroll has declined by 10% with rising unemployment, pay cuts and pay freezes. The tax rate on those earning over £150,000 will go up to 50% this driving away many people who create employment and wealth for others.

Poverty and inequality have grown under Labour since 1997. Our rates of teenage pregancy and youth unemployment are amongst the highest in Western Europe.Educational standards have deteriorated and the NHS is in a mess.

All in all Gordon Brown has been the biggest disaster this country has known in our lifetimes and. We and our children will be paying for his disasters for many years to come.

The latest revelation is that Baroness Ashton, the British EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, was a CND employee and Treasurer of CND when the CND was a powerful ally of the Soviet Union. For several years she lived with a leading member of the Communist Party while the Communist Party was closely allied with and working for the Soviet Union. Many former Communists hold high positions in the EU. Thanks to the unelected Gordon Brown signing the Lisbon Constitutional Treaty without a referendum we are now ruled by unelected former Communists.

It is a frightening picture
