Reasoned? I hope that was sarcasm as my last email was as reasoned as the average Daily Mail front page. I'm just pointing at the idiotic denialists and laughing at this point. I mean that petition thing - 21,000 scientists? yeah right. Gullible or what? But, sigh, as you asked most of it involves change and people don't often like change. Before I say what I feel people have to do let me first say that, realistically, people need to ease themselves into these things, it's about changing a lifestyle and there's zero need to suffer because of it (often you can end up wealthier, fitter and less stressed). This is just my view (in case some one wants to accuse me of preaching again). Also I have not done all of these and no one person can be expected to do all of these. Personally.. Stop eating meat. Eat fruit and vet in season. Reduce milk and egg in take. Drink tap water. Grocery shop online (for example use ocado). Compost waste. Buy less tinned goods. Buy more non packaged goods. Drink less wine - especially if it's form outside of EU. Get rid of the car or at least use it less and drive less agressively, remove uneeded luggage / roofracks and don't Keep the car you have for longer (production of a vehicle is equivalent to 2 years use roughly). User electric cars when they become available if you need a car. Walk and cycle more. Use public transport. Get rid of the TV. Don't items with precious metal or stones. Don't buy Sunday papers. Repair more of what you have. User lower power lights that give equivalent lighting (LEDs will eventually reduce the current wave of bulbs). Turn off the heating in summer and keep it low and on a timer in winter. Insulate. Use less powder in the wash and use an eco-ball. Add a water saver to your toilet system. Don't live by yourself (if you can). Live in a smaller house if you can and just stop buying so much! Do you really need all that? Live nearer to work and family - share housing and food. Don't go on long haul holidays (have you tried Europe?) Have less children. Telecommute if you can. Wider? Decentralise the power generation of the UK. Use nuclear power as well (most greens get this wrong). End coal and oil use for electricity. Provide incentives for people to micro generate power. Ignore Nimbys when they complain about wind farms. Remove support for fertility problems on the NHS. Increase green taxes, including the congestion charge. Reduce traffic access to city and town centers and increase public transport schemes. Have no go zones for cars. Make walking cycling around towns quicker by removing the amount of roads. Place trade taxes on countries with non green production methods. Have exact emmision and energy usage controls over new buildings and any new devices. Encourage conversion of spaces rather than new build where viable. Outlaw outside heaters. Increase space for allotments. Increase the tax on luxury items. Invest in green technology and increase public education. Invest in GM technology to allow for hardier plants (again something most greens get wrong). Don't blame China or India. Set an example in the UK that can be exported (Germany currently leads the way). So if you end up in an extended family eating veggie food, have a wind turbine and solar panels in your garden (near the veggie patch and compost silos), cycle to work or telecommute and generaly live with less clutter in your life then not only would you be greener but you'd probably be much happier. I know I would be. |
