In the case of N Ireland status within the UK, in the Good Friday Agreement (something else that the Brexit referendum was clueless about...), there is provision for a referendum (so-called border poll) in both N Ireland and Republic of Ireland for a united Ireland.

I don't believe the Good Friday Agreement says if the border polls should be a qualified majority or not but I'm certainly not a constitutional lawyer.

If the border poll wasn't a qualified majority, I think the UK government would be incredibly stupid to have a border poll unless they were very confident of a larger majority than 51.9% in favour of a united Ireland.

I appreciate there is a contradiction about only running a referendum unless you are confident about the result of the referendum.
