| "Caravan living is not compatible with London." You may believe that and many might agree with you but the fact remains that it is not in the Mayor's power to stop travellers coming to London. There would have to be a change of policy at central government level. Therefore he has two policy options - provide pitches or accept a higher level of illegal encampments which the current law means will be in place for up to a week while the enforcement process takes effect. I have seen few reports of travellers illegally occupying local parks this year - perhaps that is down to extra pitches perhaps that is down to to the heat. Existing pitches are full and there are few short stay pitches in London. It seems to me that extra provision is sensible. You may feel that this will just encourage more travellers to come to London but do you have any actual evidence that this is the case? I'm assuming that City Hall has issued a report explaining its policy and why it feels there will be no pull effect. Why not dig that out, read it, and if your mind isn't changed, explain to us why you believe the policy is wrong? |
