Reading the obituaries, there was an interesting back story to all of this.  He had one career turning out popular songs from the Brill building, but as that sort of music was overtaken by that of the 60s, his career faded.  He also ran into money problems and accused a manager of taking his money.

He retained a following in northern workingmen’s clubs over here and his career was ‘rescued’ by Elton John’s Rocket  label.  The backing group that helped to develop the new sound that came with his second career included members of 10cc.
