A worrying thread matching the times we are in. I was around Westminster on Saturday not for a march but because I had something pre planned and didn’t want to rearrange it. I did witness some of the march at the beginning and end. I suspect there are few people on this forum who are skilled at estimating numbers of people on any large march, certainly not by watching tv. But whether it’s people marching for Palestine or against war or Saturday’s protest there are always complaints that the mainstream media/police have deliberately underestimated the numbers. But maybe just maybe the police actually have a better idea of the numbers than the protestors or the bystanders. Of course this doesn’t fit in with the view (from whichever side) that the ‘state’ is lying. The idea that the mass media is all somehow spewing out propaganda is bonkers. There are a range of print media, much of which is right of centre, and a few of which still attempt proper journalism. Give me any of our broadcast media be it the bbc, sky, lbc or even gb news over the garbage on YouTube or twitter/x. The march was organised by a man convicted of a string of offences ranging from mortgage fraud to violent assault, including assaulting a police officer. The rally included a speech by Musk that advocated a violent insurrection. One of the marches called for Starmer’s assassination, which doubtless the police will also do nothing about just like for Farage. You might not like Starmer, you may think he is chronically useless but you now need to wait until the next election just like those of us who thought Boris or Truss were useless. As for making people feel backed into a corner I doubt there is anything that could be done speedily enough for those people. For me Starmer was actually too slow to call out Musk. Any suggestions of trying to overthrow a democratically elected government by violence is abhorrent whoever makes it. Back to my experience of the march: at the start I saw many peaceful protestors mostly middle aged white men like me, waving flags and generally being unthreatening. But at the end it got a bit more menacing. Far from the counter protesters meeting the crowd it was some people from the main protest who tried to corner the counter protestors by blocking them from the north of Whitehall. (the main protest was south of Whitewall). I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say that what we are witnessing is reminiscent of the 1930s. And it’s being fuelled by lies and misinformation on social media. That’s where the propaganda is, not on the bbc or sky or lbc… |
