Harold Wilson lowered the voting age to 18 in 1969 in the expectation it would get more votes for Labour. He then called the 1970 election in June twelve days before my 18th birthday. I recall sitting with my MP's daughter (who was 18 that August) agreeing what we thought of him for disenfranchising us by calling the election early (he could have waited until March 1971). We were delighted that he then lost. Hopefully this move will backfire on Keir Starmer in the same way, as long as it doesn't result in lots of young people voting for Nigel Farage and Reform UK (or whatever party he is leading by the time of the next election). |
