One interesting feature of this case is that, while she was on the march last November and carrying her placard, it would have been seen by many members of the public, who showed no signs of being upset by it, and many policeman, who took no action against it. It was only when a picture of her with her placard was circulated on social media afterwards 'by a right wing group' that more interest began to be shown, which led to her somewhat belated prosecution. Having said that, 'coconut' is a well-established and readily understood term of abuse, but, as the judge concluded, possibly more likely to be 'political satire' than a 'racially aggravated public order offence.' |
