It doesn't help the pain, but I have it on good authority that pain in the Achilles is generally a sign it will not snap! If your ankle is weak, there are easy therapy band exercises if that is an option for you — a physiotherapist can advise. To answer your question, with a lot of injuries and issues behind me and most likely ahead, I really like Nike Free and Ecco for shoes that don't cause pain. I would avoid traditional "supportive" options as it can lead to muscle wastage and further injury over time, it really depends on your lifestyle and goals, so a physiotherapist will be able to advise you better than I can.
