Superstition and gods have nothing to do with it. Humans introduce non-native species such as the grey squirrel - imported initially for its novelty value - with no regard to the consequences. By illegally releasing trapped grey squirrels, "deciding what species you like" is exactly what you are doing. The reason that you have never seen a red squirrel in London or the south east is that people who decided that they liked the kudos of owning one just because it was a different colour have ultimately been responsible for their disappearance. Humans plant trees and care for them for decades and then other criminal humans release squirrels that damage and destroy them. Humans interferred with other species the minute that they evolved. The Wildlife and Countryside Act and similar legislaton is there to redress the balance which it won't be able to do if people take the law into their own hands. Talking of funny, not many people advocating the protection of the non-fluffy species are there? Lots of fleas, ticks, worms and other companion animal parasites are routinely poisoned and otherwise killed and, of course ther animals that live on them - bacteria and viruses are slaughtered too. Does that fall into the category of playing "god"? |
