My wife, being French, received pamphlets giving the policies of both the second-round candidates. Amongst Macron's intentions are: -removal of the equivalent of Council Tax for 80% of the population. -60 billion euros removed from public expenditure. -50 billion euros for integration of the unemployed, large urban renewal projects and 'ecological transition'. - one third fewer MPs. -10,000 more police and a new Security Police who will remove delinquents from the areas in which they operate. -maximum of 12 children per class in primary schools in 'zones prioritaires'. -5,000 extra frontier guards -200,000 French students to go study in other EU countries each year. (Not in the UK presumably). -One teaching assistant for every handicapped child. All this has presumably been costed, and I've left out a lot of other stuff about pensions, benefits and the EU. One item not mentioned, though it was in the longer spiel issued before the first round of voting, is the reintroduction of a form of National Service. Perhaps it drew adverse comment? Bear in mind that the French already enjoy a far better range of benefits than we do. If you have 3 kids, you qualify as a 'famille nombreuse', and get discounts on almost everything, and there are other examples too. |
