The stock may well date back to 1973, however a major refurbishment took place in 1994 and since then numerous modifications have taken place including installing a digital radio system across the entire network. Trains are scheduled to have various exams after a set amount of miles and under no circumstances are they allowed to enter service over their limit. The bogies and wheels are replaced regularly as are other parts.

The incident on Saturday was isolated and it was the unions telling drivers not to drive trains which caused the 'meltdown'.

Having worked on the railways for almost 15 years, I can assure you that safety is priority and trains will be taken out of service for what some may see as minor faults. I hope this helps.
