I'm not sure but from my own experience with a digital display of speed on my car it is clear that it averages out readings. This means that in percentage terms it will be less accurate at lower speeds. It also seems to change more quickly on the way up than the way down. From what you say people who are having trouble keeping their speedometer under 20mph may actually be adhering to the speed limit because the percentage error works in their favour on the way down i.e. if your speedometer says you are 20% over the speed limit in a 20mph zone you may not actually be breaking the limit but in a 30mph zone you will be. |
