I've copied lots of old family photos just using my digital camera, a cheap tripod and natural lighting which must be even across the subject photo. You can try it handheld but you'll spend a bit longer getting the perfect copy. If you have a conservatory then that's an ideal place to set up as they tend to have diffuse lighting. For negatives I use a laptop with a blank white screen for backlighting the negative with thin tissue paper between screen and negative to diffuse the dots.
You've probably reached the conclusion I'm a bodger.....correct :0) but both procii do work really well,it doesn't cost anything to give it a try!
