ephod seems to do iDevices pre 2006. My device is an iPod nano 4th gen 2008 But ephod partner with another tool called CopyTrans which can do post 2006 iDevices CT have a suite of elated programs but my need seems to be CopyTrans itself so you download a CopyControl program installer first,  then you can pick a program - CopyTrans and the controller downloads and installs it for you I'm lucky in that I am not recovering an iPhone , ipad or iTouch so I don't need any extra apple drivers (they normally come when you install iTunes which I have not done yet) so just contect iPod with normal apple cable. CopyTrans is reading and showing all my tracks and i can select all or by a number of filters and searches and can then copy those from ipod either into iTunes itself or a simple drive folder. It looks good so far  but at the top says 100 actions left. I am going to assume that an action might be a transfer of 1 song rather than a transfer process of many songs  and there is stuff on the tutorial about getting activation codes but so far there has been so mention of the £ cost. Will give update later when I decide if I want a full straight backup in one folder or if I want to structure  it by artist genres and therfore do many actions thanks
