I recall that the other iconic sign along that stretch of road, the Martini clock, was revamped a few years ago, and while a clock remained, the colours were changed and it was no longer advertising Martini, presumably because the makers of Martini either no longer owned the site, or were no longer prepared to pay for their advertisement.
The Lucozade sign that has just been replaced was neither the original iconic design, nor, from what Adam says, was it in the same place as the original, so at best it was a pastiche. If JCD have indeed ridden a coach and horses through the planning regulations then they should be brought to account, but just what are we trying to preserve here ? Advertisements are transitory by their very nature. This is not an iconic building like the Firestone one was, or for that matter the Coty building, still extant but no longer sporting the Coty logo. Presumably the makers of Lucozade have to pay for their advertisement, and if they decided to stop doing so, should they continue to get free advertising space in a prime position ? |
