Afghanistan went through three attempts to annex it when the British Empire was at the height of its powers, a communist revolution, a Russian invasion, a Taliban takeover, and a Western attempt at liberation. The last exterior force to succeed there was led by Alexander the Great. If there is one thing that history teaches us about Afghanistan, it is to leave the place alone. The uprisings in Egypt and Syria were originally people-led, with a good number of the protesters hoping for a form of secular democracy, but the religious complications in those countries and the strength of the military (in the latter case supported by the Russians) led both countries up a dead end. |
