Saudi is not a nice country but the region doesn't really provide a beauty parade of attractive propositions for us to be friendly with. They currently seem to be the bete-noir of the left in this country because of their historic antagonism to the Iran/Russian/Assad's Syria/Hezbollah bloc who seem to have managed to persuade some useful idiots that they are actually the good guys. You can get to this conclusion by a very flexible interpretation of the facts and an unshakable belief that absolutely anything that the US and Israel do is malign. ISIS have complicated this process due to the fact that everyone dislikes them but it is really just a question of degree. The Russians and Assad dislike them less than other Syrian oppositions groups and the Iranians dislike them less than the Saudis and the Turks which is in turn reciprocated. What we shouldn't forget is that ISIS continue to kill as many Kurds, Christians, Shia and Yazidis as they can possibly get their hands on. We have the choice of doing something about this or doing nothing but we can't pretend that either choice won't involve some unpalatable moral compromises. |
