The fact is that the recycling percentage has to improve from 35% to 50% by 2050 or pay huge fines. This is both Hounslows and Ealings proposals for achieving it and I'm not at all convinced that it is the best and most efficient and effective way of doing it when the same size obviously doesn't fit all. Some of us have very little waste and others have a lot. Some of us recognise the necessity and recycle everything possible, others recycle nothing and there are the inbetweeners too. It isn't more difficult to put food in a food waste bin than in a kitchen bin. It's just mind-set. It's a case of us all needing to pull our weight for everyone's sake when apart from fines there are the continuing disposal costs which are affecting other services. There's no reason why we can't have parties but we can still recycle as much as possible by using additional containers. Christmas is the worst time of the year with massive quantities going to landfill at the tax payers expense. 80% of our waste is recyclable and we have the means of achieving it if everyone applies themselves to it. We're adaptable people. Lecture over! |
