Many thanks to all of you for your many suggestions. As I suspected at the time, the story is not quite as straight forward as I was initially told. Yes, the waiter is owed the money but some of his wages were paid in cash. After the manager left, the waiter was left in charge and at the end of one evening he was having trouble cashing up so he sought (they are friends) the assistance of the former Manager. Another member of the staff seems to have informed the owner who told him he was a traitor and he was asked to leave on the spot. The plot thickens. I understand that no one at the restaurant had ever been asked to supply any dockets, etc. for VAT and nor had any of them received any documentation which would suggest that NI or tax was being paid and so the story goes on. I have now been supplied with the name and tel. of a solicitor who will discuss his situation and see what can be salvaged for the waiter. At the end of the day the more interesting option could be the online HMRC Tax Evasion Hotline. I shall go quiet on this for now but if there is an interesting outcome in a few months time, I will post again. |
