FWIW: Mr Pease's experience is salutary. Gearbox repair is specialist stuff and the best bet is a gearbox expert - a main dealer probably has as much idea on how to repair a g/box as Soni Jewellers has in adjusting watch strap without damaging it. That is why the dealer says "you've got to replace the g/box sir" because all they can do these days is replace things to try and sort a problem. It's simpler and much more profitable. Unscrupulous dealers can send the faulty unit to a repairer and keep the new unit - either provided under warranty or paid for by trusting customer. Reprehensible but, sadly, true. My 100% g'teed honest and brilliant g/box man sadly died some years ago so I don't currently have a personal recommendation but you may well need to send the g/box away or arrange for it to be removed from the vehicle and sent to said expert. DO NOT use a dealer unless the g/box is hyper-technical (some Audi, Porsche or M-B items) and the car under warranty. I can recommend a mechanic in Chiswick if you find someone to extract a g/box. Indeed, this chap is your best bet for an honest MOT who won't find stuff in order to charge you for the repair (like the 'chirpy chappies' at a well-known Chiswick tyre emporium who some still haven't rumbled yet) Speak with Omar at Acton Car Care on Colville Road, off Bollo lane - near Chiswick Auctions. tel. 0208 993 6539. Good luck and let us know if you find someone capable & honest! P.S. Just seen Elizabeth's reply - fully concur in respect of older Mercedes-Benz models. He is a specialist which is what you want. He'll undoubtedly know a good g/box man/woman so worth a call. W4 Autos are also good based on personal experience. |
