According to some of the urban-myth websites, reports of this scam originated in Sydney in 2008 and reappeared in Vancouver in 2012. In each case, the e-mails that did the rounds spoke of a 3.50 (dollar) charge and a loss of 4000 (dollars). Always good to be alert to scams, of course, but could it be a bit uncanny that the (sterling) figures now reported from Twickenham are exactly the same as those from Australia and Canada many years ago?
