If you ventured out of the car park and into the actually grounds you would find that there has been a substantial improvement over the last decade. There was a point some years ago when the gardens were in a chronically bad condition. The grant funding that it receives has to be matched by revenues generated by the Chiswick House itself which forces them to think of ways to make money. As the park has remained open for us to enjoy at no charge and there has been no meaningful intrusion brought about by commercial events any rational person can recognise that a reasonable balance has been found between keeping public access and reducing the burden on the public purse of maintaining Chiswick House. That the park and grounds has been managed well over this period should not however mean that we should be complacent. There does seem to have been a degree of stealth in the way the car park extension has been handled. Perhaps renewed financial pressures means that greater compromises to commercialisation are becoming necessary to balance the books. |
