Never understood the economics of bookies in the 21st century. Whenever I pass one there seem to be a few sad souls inside and they are never doing particularly brisk business. Given the rent and rates on a place like Chiswick High Road and increasing online competition it is a mystery how they survive. One or two have closed recently but it is not so long that others have opened.

Can anybody explain how they actually cover their costs?
