I agree that Saddam was a horrible, murderous dictator, but so was Gaddafi, and look what happened to Libya after he went. I think we (i.e. the West) need to stop getting rid of dictators just because they're horrible. Of course they're horrible, but from the point of view of realpolitik, it takes a horrible person to keep the lid on the warring factions of the Middle East. I think we should stop muddying the waters by plotting to get rid of Assad - the opposition to him aren't a bunch of choirboys, either. The main threat in the area is ISIS, and it is towards the destruction of that crowd of psychopaths that our energies should be directed, and if it means working with the Russians, so be it. |
