I don't think you can eradicate an ideology by bombing. As for 'bombing ISIS back to the Stone Age' (how our military leaders love a cliché), ISIS are pretty well there already, so again, bombing won't make much difference to them. The only policy which might physically contain their spread is 'boots on the ground', but apart from the courageous Kurds (who are being attacked by our friends, the Turks), no-one else seems inclined to make that commitment (the Iraqi army ran away at the first sign of trouble). In fact, the Middle East is in such a shambles of sectarianism, tribalism and murderous factions that I think the best thing we can do is get out, secure our borders and hope for the best. |
