"Nowhere does he suggest that terrorists in the process of mass slaughter should not be taken out." Nor does he suggest the opposite, i.e. that they should be taken out as quickly as possible. After rather dodging around the question of what he would do, his actual words are, 'I'm not happy with a shoot-to-kill policy in general'. I would suggest that nobody is happy with a shoot-to-kill policy in general, which is why the great majority of people are happy to have an unarmed police force, and why the shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes produced such a great outcry and huge criticism of the police at the time. Corbyn's reluctance to confront the question suggests that he would be ineffective in a situation that called for decisive and possibly lethal action in order to save the maximum number of lives. The corollary of my argument is not that we should all be gung-ho about the use of firearms on the streets, but that his indecisive and dilatory approach would result in the loss of even more innocent lives. In short, people would die so that Jeremy could salve his conscience and feel good about himself. |
