My father, who was a road safety expert back in the 1960s was against box junctions. They cost a lot more than you might imagine to mark up and in his opinion all junctions should be treated as box junctions. It's common sense and basic courtesy not to enter a junction which you can't exit, when the only effect of so doing will be to stop somebody else proceeding.
Whilst the roads are a slightly different proposition from 1967, the laws of box junctions are a pretty fair reflection of the principle that my father expounded!
