Tackling multi-national tax avoidance is an almost impossible task. These companies employ the best legal and financial minds to minimise their tax bills and every Government in the world has struggled with a way to deal with this. I don't have a problem with companies avoiding tax - they would be sued by their shareholders for incompetence if they didn't. However, that doesn't mean I don't think that local people should be aware of companies that do gain a significant advantage by paying less tax and that they should choose a local independent alternative if one is available. Starbucks is probably the most clear cut case but firms like Boots and Specsavers also use offshore tax arrangements quite aggressively to pay a very low corporate tax rate. If anyone knows of any other of the large chains on the High Road paying an unduly low rate of corporation tax it would be good to hear about them. |
