"Jonny Speight's and Warren Mitchell's brilliant Alf Garnett was arguably the most socially important satirical creation in television history. With England in the mid 60's still riddled with racism, prejudice and the sort of pig-ignorant opinionated claptrap Alf spewed ad nauseam – Mr Garnett was created to be laughed AT as opposed to WITH. Yet ironically many agreed with the old git." Quite correct, Speight meant Garnett to be a figure of fun, scorn even, for his objectionable, outdated views. But as somebody pointed out, Garnett got all the best lines, which led to people sympathising with him. Anyhow, what should not be forgotten is that there was far more to Warren Mitchell and his acting career than Alf Garnett. In fact, he was a very distinguished actor, and (apparently) a very decent bloke. RIP. |
