Very interesting story in the Independent about a Welsh town which has successfully fought back against the intrusion of larger corporate retailers. They are now looking to set up an offshore incorporation to get the same tax advantages that the bigger chains do to protect themselves further from unfair competition. Chiswick actually has survived relatively well compared to other town centres with plenty of really good independent businesses hanging on in there but the advantages enjoyed by the bigger companies combined with ever rising rents creates constant pressure on genuinely local businesses.
