Jonathan makes an interesting, if unrealised point.

Smoothness.

Among the big cycling turn-offs are:

Poorly surfaced roads. There are many roads in the borough where the finish consists on stones in tar, which are now well worn, and which make it very uncomfortable to ride due to the resulting vibration.

Bike lanes are usually in the gutter, which is where rubbish and loose stones (see above) end up (and dead leaves, at the moment). It's also where drain covers are. That doesn't make for a relaxing ride.

What is a minor pothole if you're in a car with super-duper suspension and big squidgy tyres can be - literally - a pain in the backside when riding a bike.

Where's all this going? For me, as (or more) important as road redesign is road maintenance and 'finish'. Smooth, debris-free, bump free, hole-free roads would make cycling  a much more pleasant experience and keep those who've tried cycling on their bikes for longer.
