I'm a former bike commuter so also possibly not your target group, but here's my ten penn'orth. For reference I was a reasonably confident cyclist, happy to deal with Parliament Square in the dark, for example. My journey (Chiswick to/from Liverpool Street) was about 45 mins on the bike compared to 60 by tube, but then add 20-30 minutes sweating and showering time so comparable overall.

Route preference: I was prepared to take a slightly more roundabout route to avoid the worst traffic - and in the morning to make sure I was on the road by 0700 for the same reason. I wouldn't, though, have used the Embankment / Westway route that's in the pipeline as that's way too circuitous.

I was able to work out my own backstreet route, so not particularly interested in signposted routes.  What I would have appreciated was properly segregated bike routes through the worst pinch points.  The worst issues were westbound: there's no good way over the West London Line - it's either Shepherds Bush squareabout, Hammersmith Broadway, or the A4 from Earl's Court to West Ken - none of which is attractive due to high traffic speeds and/or lots of traffic making turns and not looking for cyclists.  Kensington High Street either side of the Church Street junction was an absolute no-no for me other than very early am, especially westbound - lanes appearing and disappearing, parked cars, turning vehicles, just altogether too hairy. There are backstreet ways around that but they're not great.

Another thing to say is that segregation won't work if it adds too much time.  Hyde Park Corner comes to mind: there's a bike route from Green Park into Hyde Park through the middle of the roundabout, but the signal phasing is so bike-unfriendly that it takes four signal cycles to get across the bike route as designed - which means that I and lots of other cyclists either took the road or cut slightly dicey corners on the bike route. That location isn't really granny territory.

What would get me back on the bike?  Better routes through the pinch points would be #1. I don't like having to sprint through a junction to get out of the way of traffic that I know has its eyes on other vehicles and not on me.  To be honest, #2 would probably be better shower facilities in my office.  Version A would be fine for 2-3 mile commutes, but for my 9 miles I want it to be reasonably fast. Version B sounds OK but I'm concerned that the 'infrequent' interaction with traffic would be at exactly the pinch points I'm keen to avoid.

Sorry to go on, but I hope it's some help.
