Go on James, I'll be the first to try to answer ;-)

I perhaps commute by bike once every couple of weeks, usually when I also have appointments later in the day in SE London (which means I end up cycling 40-50 miles during that day), my Mrs. would like to cycle on the roads but is scared to do so.

I've been a keen cyclist since I was young (when I'd often cycle 20 - 30 miles a day training) and although we lived out in the sticks I still cycled through towns etc.      Consequently I'm used to interacting with traffic and what has always concerned me about cycling strategies is that if cyclists are largely segregated from roads/rarely need to interact with vehicles, then their ability/competence/confidence to do so when the need arises suffers enormously.  In the same way I'd be concerned that if cyclists don't have any interaction with vehicles at junctions then they get so used to not having to give way/wait etc. that they are more likely to cycle through red lights etc.

Obviously there needs to be somewhere safe for the very young and the elderly to cycle, and I'm conscious of the fact my Mrs. is put off cycling due to traffic volumes etc., but as I say to her to me the best way of dealing with that is to gradually become more familiar with it, rather than using segregated cycle paths etc. which do not require her to get used to riding in traffic.

So I'm firmly in the Group B camp.
