What the mayor does on Remembrance Sunday should be his own choice. The problem with insisting that people duly observe the ceremony of remembrance is that too often it seems more like some sort of test of patriotism. There are far too many fake storms in the media about lack of respect for the glorious dead (remember the "donkey jacket" scandal?). The criticism of Siena Miller for not wearing a poppy on the Graham Norton show was ridiculous. Jon Snow coined an apt name for it when he was subjected to similar criticism - "poppy fascism". |
