John, the mortgage default certainly is the issue.I completely agree with you where foreign investment is concerned. But foreigners are only interested in high value assets like multi million pound London properties.I shouldn't think there are a lot of Chinese investors queuing up to pour their money into a two bedroom terrace home in bradford with a £20k pricetag. As I said, when interest rates rise by a couple of percentage points, a lot of people will not be able to afford the mortgage repayments and will put their homes on the market. As more homes are put up for sale, prices will drop and people will find themselves in negative equity stuck ith a house they can't sell, and can't afford to pay the mortgage. This will end with the mortgage company repossessing the property and selling it for what the market will pay, usually much less than was paid for the property leaving the mortgage payer with a huge balance left to pay. These repossessed houses will further depress the market. |
