Recycling percentages are dependant on the number of different recyclables collected for recycling and the participation rate.
LBH collect a comprehensive range of recyclables.
In Chiswick the partition rate is relatively high.
In Hounslow it is very low.
Mixed mode recycling is not sorted at the kerb so is heavily contaminated and mechanical sorting at a Materials Reclaimation Facility ( MRF ) is only capable of basic materials. It can't deal with textiles, shoes, batteries, engine oil or electricals. They therefore, if collected at all, would have to be left in carrier bags next to or on top of the recycling bin for housing on the truck and removing before everything else is tipped out onto the ground, picked up by JCB and loaded onto a conveyer belt for computerised sorting into different chutes. Any thing else goes down dross chutes for landfill or incineration. Textiles and electricals can't be included because they would get caught round the basics and jam up the works. If there are any plastic
bags the same thing happens.
That is why collection in sacks from flats over shops is for basics only and there is a lot of contamination eg card coffee cups still with the plastic lid on, newspapers in plastic bags and other things thrown in.
Recycling percentages are calculated by weight when the trucks go over weighbridges. With MRF a lot of it isn't actually recycled but it has already been weighed.
