Agreed Paul, I've never understood the logic of building a new stadium in the hope that the fans will fill it. Rotherham's newish ground for instance has a similar capacity to Griffin Park, but has the potential to be extended and to me that makes much more sense than a historically 'small' club building a 20,000+ capacity stadium. Do clubs really want to play in a half empty stadium or follow the example of several clubs (Coventry, Darlington etc.) who move into new stadiums and then encounter all kinds of financial problems for years to come ?. The club nearest which I was born, Grimsby, play in a very old stadium and had planning permission for a new stadium, which duly went out the window primarily because the club went out the Football League and in my view the one good thing about Grimsby being relegated was that it stopped the new stadium happening anytime soon. |
