Dear Matt, My original question was a fairly simple 'What's going on?' rather than a complaint. I do now remember something posted here about the council winning a 'Green Flag' award. I personally don't think the flagpole looks ugly at all - compared with the monolithic buildings of Chiswick Business Park looming over Victorian London immediately behind the flagpole when walking West and the probable addition of the high rise apartments of the Empire House development to the other side of the tube tracks, I think the flagpole is almost invisible by comparison! Nor do I have any issue with the council having spent some money improving Acton Green Common - I think it is a great outdoor space and can get absolutely packed of a summer's evening, which is how it should be. However, I can't imagine why the council thought it appropriate to spend who-know's how much money on installing a flagpole which cannot possibly have any utility for those who use the Green / Common. As has been implied elsewhere, it sounds like a true vanity project! |
