Dear David, The purpose of the flagpole is apparently to advertise the fact that Acton Green has been awarded a 'Green Flag' Award by this organisation: http://www.greenflagaward.org.uk/. If you search that site and look into the alleged benefits of this award you will see that one of them is for the Council itself to: "demonstrate to the local community that a clear improvement has been made to a site." It is of course ironic that, having recieved (and paid for) this award, the Council should then deem it acceptable to plant an ostentatious eyesore of a flapole bang in the in middle of Acton Green, simply to advertise that fact. In case you are wondering, I have rung the Council and have been told that they intend this to be a PERMANENT feature of our Green. While I am generally supportive of the good work Ealing Council has does on Acton Green, in this case I feel they've seriously misjudged things. Surely there are less invasive and more tasteful ways to advertise an award (a nice little plaque perhaps?) I would therefore encourage you (and any other local residents) to complain asap, as I have done, to the council via email. In a first instance go to the complaints procedure on their website: http://www.ealing.gov.uk/info/100004/council_and_democracy/516/complaints/2 Secondly, you may also want to complain directly to the Events department of Ealing Council, which was responsible for this (unconsulted) decision: events@ealing.gov.uk Good luck.
