It is ironic that people criticise the European colonial powers for imposing their standards on the colonised peoples, and then also criticise Saudi Arabia - which was never colonised by the European powers - for maintaining its own traditions.

IMHO the only realistic alternative to the present Saudi government would be a religious-led regime that would make Isis/Daesh look like civilised moderates. It is therefore in the interests of all civilised people that there should not be an Islamist revolution in Saudi Arabia and that we should maintain relations with the present government and do our best to encourage them to accept more civilised arrangements for their legal system, treatment of women and foreign domestic workers.

There was hope that the Middle East was moving forwards with the Arab Spring, but the only country that may have benefited from it is Tunisia - Libya, Egypt, Syria are all worse off now than they were before.

"...its imposition of the extreme Wahabi form of Islam on the entire population".

This ignores the fact that there are significant numbers of Shia Muslims in Saudi Arabia, particularly in the Eastern Province.
