"Following you down a busy road for 10 minutes, noisily seeking attention and not fully grown - probably lost." Not necessarily. My mother lives in deepest West Cork, along the Sheep's Head peninsula south of Bantry. Whenever I visit her I try to do the "lighthouse walk" from the end of the peninsula road at Tooreen out past Lough Akeen, to the lighthouse. It's a 90 minute round walk there and back, along rough hilltop pathways in the most wonderful scenery with Bantry Bay on one side, Dunmanus Bay on the other, and the wild Atlantic ahead of you. Last time I did it, I was joined by a cat as I left the car park at Tooreen. The cat followed me along the open footpath, up into the hills, and all the way to the lighthouse. It sat a few yards away whilst I had a sandwich and took some photos, and then followed me all the way back again. It never came too close, but never left my sight all the way out and back. I never saw a cat do that before, it definitely enjoyed the company for the walk (so did I), and as we arrived back at the car park almost 2 hours later it dashed off towards a farmhouse nearby, so it obviously lived there. Funny things cats. |
