Tim As a parent and occasional cyclist and regular pedestrian, as well as driver, I would have to strongly disagree. The problem is too many of use when driving are not sensitive enough to other road users or the unexpected. Certainly in central Chiswick and on residential roads, there is simply no need to do more than 20mph, even when possible. If only a couple of lives are saved or accidents avoided then personally I think its a good idea. The real risk today is not CHR itself, its the side roads and residential cut throughs, and I regularly see people zooming along these, even short distances, at well above the speed limit. There people have no concern for other peoples safety. I suspect the overall effect will be to slow people down, so at least someone doing 25mph on a side road is better than someone doing 35mph today. The difference is stoppign distances and impact are significant. |
